I have been seeing this Great Blue Heron just about every time I visit this spot. Perhaps that makes it even more exciting for me when it flies off, and I get the opportunity to witness it. The anticipation kills me with delight, every time. Or when a group of students unknowingly goes near it, I watch and wait for them to see it. It is usually my favorite part of the day.
Except some people don’t react to this event in the way that makes sense to me. To me, seeing a Great Blue Heron so close, no matter how many times you have seen one, is incredible! They are huge and full of beauty. Yet some people see it, and turn their gaze to look at their friend, and continue their conversation, as if it were something as everyday as a plane going by. It baffles me and somehow, it pains me.
But this day was different. These students have not let the middle school angst disrupt their Great Blue Heron sighting. They knew this was special. They were let loose with joy, adventure, and connection. Thank you, Great Blue Heron, for engaging in this chase for these young people. And thank you, middle schoolers, for reminding me how captivating YOU are, as you are captivated by this big, blue, incredible bird.
